Melrose Music artist D.I.M is a style-melding bands often come across better on paper than they do in real life, mostly because it's a lot harder than it looks to fuse disparate elements into a cohesive whole. It requires not only skill, but a certain sensibility as a group of artists.
Both elements are clearly on display in the music of Department of Intellectual Mind or D.I.M for short. Based in Los Angeles, the band creates music that combines tense minor key blues/rock, psychedelic dreaminess, and Beatle-ish pop into something arresting and fresh that fits inside of three-minute songs. Formed in 2017, the band is already impressively creative, even at this early stage.

D.I.M.’s upcoming record, Vol. 1 The Pieces Fit , shows listeners a young band with an intact and evolving vision of rock and roll built on both craft and emotion. Taken as a unit, vocalist Jasmine White, guitarist/vocalist Chad Ellis, bassist Martin Fredriksson, and drummer Daniel Ramos make music with smoldering conviction and it's no surprise that the group is gaining traction in the competitive L.A. market. The songwriting is lean and agile and supported by arrangements that are minimally lush and never obscure the point. The track “Inside Your Mind” shows the band at its best with an intense and deeply felt rock vibe that slides into a major key dream pop guitar break in a way that makes perfect sense upon first listen. Other highlights include the edgy and driving “Waving My Flag” and the Beatle-esque psychedelics of “Last Bus.”

D.I.M. is a young, growing band with sound, soul, and vision to spare, so much so that the plan is to deliver a new record to the world on the first of each month. With so much on tap, the choice to grow up in public in this way also makes perfect sense. It's the best and bravest way to get to the music they came here to make. If the music D.I.M. has made to to date is any indication, it's going to be quite a year.
